What is this symbol?

Post by Beauknowsdiddly » Tue Jun 02, 2020 12:08 pm

Hey Everyone!
Can someone please tell me what this symbol is over the G?

I'm thinking it's some kind of rest, but then I think, how can I rest and play the note at the same time?

Thank you!!
Thank You!

It's a 16th rest and a flat sign for the dotted 8th of E, making it a E-flat.

The G is the first voice on the staff, while the rest and E-flat are a second voice. "A voice is a musical line or part which can have its own rhythm independently of other voices on the same staff." (from here). This means, that you should play the G at the start of the bar, and after a 16th rest you should play the E-flat (for a dotted 8th, and whatever is tied to it, based on the bar before a quarter?) along the G, which is still held.

The rest is a typographical choice, in some edits it is not displayed in such cases.

Thanks for the reply flatpanda!

I figured it was something like that. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

'Course it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to even put that there. But I don't even know how to read music so who am I to say. lol

and like you said.
"typographical choice" :)

Thanks again and have a SUPER day! :)
Thank You!
