Sound shorting on iPad

Hi,
I'm trying to use my ipad for lessons and the keyboard sound works for about 10-15 seconds and then literally shorts out (with a sound that sounds like a real electrical short). I have a Yamaha P-95 keyboard with a USB interface into my iPad. Is anyone else experiencing this? This doesn't happen when using my Macbook. I like the iPad as its much easier to set in the sheet music cradle and I don't have to have a funky setup to get my laptop positioned above my keyboard to practice.
