Is there a way to speed up playback similar to youtube videos - 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x options?

There's nothing built into the (Windows) PG app that I can find, but you could use an external media player such as VLC. The [ and ] keys control playback speed.

The following is a bit fiddly but it does work.

The video lessons are stored as MP4 files. On Windows (don't know about other platforms), under the Help menu, is an option to Open Playground Data Folder. In there you'll see the PlaygroundLog file. Open it up and scroll to the bottom to find the lesson number you are working on. It's some random number. That will be a folder in the assets folder, and inside that you'll find the mp4 file.
