lesson 42 key signature and count-in

I'm on lesson 42 that uses the song "Sorry"
according to the time signature (a C with a vertical line through it) the timing is 2/2, but the countdown is "1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, set, go" as if it were 4/4.
Interestingly, if I slow the timing to 50 BPM or slower, the countdown changes to "1, 2, set, go" which is what I would expect the countdown to be for 2/2 time.
Why would the count-in not be "1, 2, set, go" always?
