tied and untied 16th notes question

Post by clif9710 » Thu Nov 01, 2018 5:18 pm

In the advanced bootcamp, lesson 4 on tied 16th notes, I am confused by what I find in measure three for the right hand.

In this measure I find a double barred pair of 16th notes, a C and then a D. No problem on how to play that, but following there comes a second, but separately double barred D followed by single barred E (an 8th note).

When I select the right hand piano demo, the two 16th note D's are played as one 8th note. Since there is no slur to indicate the two D notes should be played continuously, I'm confused about why they are so played in the demo instead of being played as two distinct D notes.

Hi Clif,

Thanks for pointing this one out. I see it's lesson segment 5, specifically.

If you look closely, you'll see what looks like a dot between the two D's. This is actually supposed to be a tie. Due to the nature of the interactive sheet music, sometimes it compresses each system, and therefore ties get "squished" into looking like dots. There's nothing we can do to fix this right now, but just know that it's supposed to be tied.

Aha! I thought there might be a dot there. Thanks, Andrew
