an independent metronome is very helpful

Post by clif9710 » Sat Dec 22, 2018 5:55 pm

I found an electronic metronome that someone had thrown away and discovered it is a great aid in practicing difficult passages. AFAIK PS has no way of letting its metronome run continuously independently and this is where the external one comes in handy

I set the independent metronome for a slow tempo at first, one where I can easily handle the passage I am trying to master. As the metronome runs, as soon as I finish the passage, without a break I immediately return to the start of the passage and play it again, over and over and over as I get it down perfectly. Then, I increase the tempo and repeat.

With the built in PS metronome this can't be done. Though I can highlight a passage to practice, after playing it I have to click on the PLAY button to clear the screen of error notes and get the PS metronome to start again. This breaks up the playing in order to do the reset.

Allowing the PS metronome to run continuously would be a nice feature.

Which keyboard are you using? Many keyboards have a metronome built in.

I don't know when or if that feature will be added, but that would be great, I agree. I'll bring it up.

Type Metronome into Google and one will pop up on the Google page... or just install a free, or premium, one on your phone. You can't swing a dead cat on the internet without hitting an online metronome.

A metronome with a blinking light is nice - once it feels like your fingers are making the light flash, you know you're in sync. A book I'm reading - "Fundamentals of Piano Practice" - claims that the brain tends to eventually start ignoring the beep of a metronome as a self-protective measure, but doesn't seem to be affected by the light. You don't have to look directly at the instrument to use it, just let it blink away somewhere a little out of your line of sight. (FOPP is available as a free pdf download, just google under the title, if you're interested. It has a ton of useful information.)
