Cabling for 1986 Yamaha DX7

Post by DrAKS » Wed Feb 08, 2017 12:17 pm

I am planning to use a 1986 midi only Yamaha DX7 with the iPad Pro after I decide which subscription to take.

I am planning to get a midi to USB cable and connect to the iPad Pro with the USB to lightening connector.

Will this work?

Thanks

As long as this keyboard has a MIDI connection, it will work with Playground. We recommend buying the lighting to USB adapter directly from Apple.

It will work but you may find a few issues...One of them being that the velocity value on the DX7 is limited to around 100 (these days normal velocity goes to 127) so you may find yourself having to re-assess your dynamics when you switch up to a different board. Another thing to consider is the synth action keys (arguably not the best action to learn on) Also the keys on the DX7 are a bit narrower than standard keys. When learning to play, key action is a big consideration. Synth action keys just do not offer the same expression capabilities that fully weighted graded hammer action offers. You could get by with a good quality semi weighted keybed as in the Panorama, Novation Impulse or M-Audio code 61, but for best results I would go with a good fully weighted bed such as the Roland RD-64
