Just received the Kawai CA98. I was told this was compatible with Playground Sessions. Can anyone tell me how I can connect it to my Ipad 3? Thanks

Thanks for posting here. Please let me know the following details:

1. What connection options are on the back of the Kawai
2. What connection options are on your iPad 3 - is it lightning?

You have a few options. The easiest is the "USB To Host" port to a USB port "Camera Adapter." If I'm remembering correctly the iPad 3 had the 30 pin cable on the iPad side (correct me if I'm wrong). That Camera Adapter will likely be hard to find if you don't have one already. The cable for the Kawai side of things is a "USB Printer" cable. Page 12 of the owners manual has a picture of the port (Number 8) that shows the squarish USB port. That's the standard port used originally with printers - and most "To Host" ports of MIDI Keyboards with USB, including the CA98.

The other option is to get something like a Roland UM-ONE and connect to the standard 5 pin round MIDI ports. These are right next to the USB "To Host" port.

You might need USB Drivers from Kawai, though most current keyboards don't need drivers these days.

Hi Andrew / Switch

Thanks very much for your replies.

OK, I have now bought a USB printer cable and an adaptor to connect the cable to the Ipad, which is as you say a 30 pin connection. So all good on the connection front from piano to Ipad.

However when I start the Playground Sessions app on my Ipad and start doing an exercise, and playing on the piano, the Ipad doesn't see what I'm playing. I guess I need to do something more to get the two devices talking to each other than just connecting them with a cable but I'm not sure what. At least I hope they will talk to each other, because the piano cost a fortune and I bought a lifetime subscription to Playground Sessions.

Would be really grateful for any more advice you can give me to get this working, thank you. Simon

When you open Playground, you might need to tell it what device to listen to. My iPad wanted to listen to the Network Session 1. Which I don't have. Which was confusing! This was in the Settings from the bottom left of the screen. Then the "Piano" tab. You should see your Kawai in the window there. Just click it and it should now be good to go. Oh, you might have to tell the app it is 88 keys if it doesn't figure that out on its own.

Thanks. Tried that and it just says: "No device found". I've tried switching it all off, then switching it all on when connected, but still says the same.

Going through the Kawai settings, I don't see anything there that I should do to make it connect.

Why don’t you use Bluetooth ?

Tried that too, it won't work with Bluetooth either.

OK, I tried to connect it to an even older Ipad and it worked! Which is great news, as at least I know the piano and Ipad do actually connect, but now I have to figure out why it won't connect to my Ipad. I am guessing the bit where it goes into the Ipad is somehow not connecting properly, however it charges ok.

support@playgroundsessions.com is the best way to reach us if the technical issues continue.

And no, bluetooth does not work, in most cases.
