metronome issues

I'm using a Mac and this program seems to be kinda glitchy - anyone else have trouble with the metronome? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't - it's pretty frustrating because I have no idea when to start playing if it's not working. I have no idea what to do - I've checked my connections and speaker output. I'd appreciate any ideas because I really like this program when it works!
