Old Casio Tone Bank CT-700

Post by simonspeak » Sun Dec 16, 2018 9:15 am

Hi! Does anyone know if Playground Sessions will work with an OLD (and I do emphasize OLD!) Casio Tone Bank CT-700 keyboard with MIDI in and out ports? Despite its age, the keyboard is in good working condition. I'd like to try out Playground Sessions without having to invest in a new keyboard. Thanks!

It's an awful choice but it should work.
Why do I say it's awful... it only has 12 note polyphony!!! So, the sustain pedal is pretty much pointless. It also only has 61 keys. It does NOT have a piano action. And, the keys are shiny plastic, un-weighted and springy like synth keys... which is the opposite of what you want in piano keys.

On the bright side, it has one channel MIDI in, out, and through. One channel is all you need. It's also velocity sensitive. So, yes it will work. You might have to buy a 5 pin din to USB cable. And, if you continue to play piano its limitations will quickly become an unbearable hindrance. But, again, it should work. Did I mention the 12 note polyphony?

(I agree on all points, but) Is the 12 note poly an issue when controlling an external device over MIDI? It might just be a limitation of the audio internals of the keyboard (that you would not use)...

@Laurensss I didn't think of that. Probably not. I never use the PGS virtual piano (I'm either listening to the internal samples of my Kawai MP11SE or some other Piano Library e.g. Pianoteq, Ivory II, VI Labs, Addictive Keys, Keyscape etc...) So, it slipped my mind that most people probably do.

I don't use the pgs sounds either :) those could really do with an upgrade. But they might just beat the Casio.

It'll work. You just need a MIDI to USB cable.
