Yamaha DGX-660 doesn’t recognize keys

Post by 3tcco » Fri Jul 19, 2019 6:09 pm

I have a Yamaha Portable Grand DGX-660. I'm on Windows 10 and I just update the driver successfully for my keyboard.
During "Configure Keyboard", it shows my device as "Portable Grand - 1" (when i turn off my keyboard it does not show so it appears the software can see my device) However... on the next window that asks me to play the leftmost key, it doesn't do anything. It won't recognize any key on the keyboard.

I’m stuck and support is closed. Any ideas?

Hi there,

I also have a Yamaha DGX-660. I'm using my iPad Pro with the piano, and use the Yamaha wireless MIDI adapter connect between the Piano and iPad. It works pretty well. I think, you may need a MIDI adapter for your Piano when you connect with your PC as well.

You can get the MIDI Adapter from Amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CF ... UTF8&psc=1

Hope this helps.

Thanks
Amos

Try this:

With the DGX-660 up and running -
1) Press the FUNCTION button
2) Use the CATEGORY buttons to find the MIDI section
3) Turn the dial to find "Keyboard Out"
4) Make sure the "Keyboard Out" is set to "ON"

Normally it should default to "ON" - but maybe it got turned off a some point.

Another possibility is the keyboard is set to "PC MODE" = PC1. You want PC2 or OFF. This is the CATEGORY just before the MIDI section. Most of the time you'll want "PC MODE" = OFF (PC MODE = PC2 you hear no internal sounds from the keyboard).

Amos,

I'm thrilled that adapter worked for you - but I'm going to jump in here and publicly warn against using wireless adapters.

We've found through testing that the best set up for a keyboard to an iPad is the following:

From the keyboard:

1. USB A to B cable, or, MIDI to USB Cable
2. Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.

to the iPad.

If the wireless set up works for you that is great, though! Connections tend to be spotty in general for those.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your advice!

I think your cable connection way will be much solid. By using my wireless connection, I will have to click on "Connect" from the Yamaha MIDI app to get connected, then using the Playgroundsessions app. But I'm used to it now, and I don't feel it's a big hassle now. (As I'm a computer geek, I can live with it ;) ).

The benifit by using wireless connection are:
1. You never need to plug / unplug cables, but just click on "connect" from your iPad each time before you use the piano;
2. You can charge your iPad at the same time when you play the piano.

Yes. You are right, Andrew! :)

Andrew, I have a quick question: Where can I find this course on my iPad ?
* I just received an emial last night says:
"Congratulations! You've just unlocked the "1 Octave Scales (Rookie/Intermediate)" course. You've unlocked this course by completing the Bootcamp lesson: "Both Hands Practice"!" There is an image in the email: Image

It looks like the image was from MacOS system, where can I find it on the iPad?

Thank you

Amos

Amos, I think you will find the 1 Octave Scales extremely useful.

iPad lumps all the courses in the same window as the rest. You might have to log out of the app so that it updates. I close it completely after every session. I find the iPad and the app behave better if I do.

On mine I see "Rookie Tour," "Intermediate Tour," "Advanced Tour," and then the other courses like "Both Hands Practice," "1 Octave Scales," "50 Famous Melodies" and "Chords Practice - Triads." At the bottom of that list will be the categories of the songs you've purchased.

It's also worth noting that you might have to refresh your iPad app (make sure to force quit it so that you have to log back in again). The system will need to refresh and r-synchronize with your account.
