there's something about music that we all love

Post by clif9710 » Mon Jun 11, 2018 5:53 pm

I have two grandkids in a home with a piano that nobody knows how to play. The other day, the kids were romping around and I went over to the piano and began to play a simple sequence of chords I had learned with PS. The kids suddenly looked up and stared at me in silence - how is this neat sound coming from the piano?! What's true for them seems to be true for everyone including me. Music even at the simplest is captivating and all the more enjoyable if you can make it happen.

I was at a party years ago where someone sat down and started running through tunes on the piano effortlessly. It was again in a home where the piano simply sat there as decoration. We were all awed and smiling ear to ear. It's easy to see how long ago, before modern technology, gathering around the piano was a very big thing to do when people got together. Everyone loves music. The lesson for kids is a good one - you can only achieve if you put in the time to make it happen. Nobody sits down at a keyboard and plays the first time. Practice really is what makes perfect.

I was lucky, growing up. We always had musical instruments in the house. A piano and a hand full of guitars, many harmonicas and they all got played. There were also musical toys, too, such as the toy xylophones. One thing that I've known but seldom thought to say outloud is that music is meant to be played, to be performed, and to be played with.

So that is a mantra that many need to learn. Music is meant to be played.

You don't hide it away on some dusty shelves. You play it.

A piano is not just an expensive home decoration. It is music waiting to be unleashed.

Whistle while you work? Hum a little tune now and then? Music is with us everywhere - we take it with us, inside us. Let it out and express it!
